IllBaz, MELODOWNZ and Raiza Biza announce High Beams.

Three of the brightest local talents in the new generation of hip-hop artists have joined forces to create High Beams, a seven track project to be released through Sony Music New Zealand and distributed through The Orchard on 27 July. High Beams showcases IllBaz‘s unique production chops with two of the best rappers in the game – MELODOWNZ and Raiza Biza.

High Beams was created in Baz’s bedroom studio in Mt Roskill where Raiza and Bronson (MELODOWNZ) would play FIFA and lay down vocals on Baz’s countless demos. From there the boys took the album to Red Bull Studios where they linked up with the all-star line-up of  TeeksChe FuDirty (Eno x Dirty) and High Hoops who all added ridiculous features.

High Beams is about shining a light on things that are discarded or overlooked, especially living in New Zealand, a country so distant from conflicts and human injustice on a large scale.

“We’re just bringing it home and putting it in the music so it can’t be ignored,” said IllBaz.

“This is not a political project in particular, but those themes are things we each think about often,’ adds Raiza Biza.

“Baz being from Palestine, myself being from Rwanda, and Melo being Polynesian. We see and deal with these issues daily. Most of our common ground lies in what makes us different, but at the end of the day, we are young people who want to be happy. No different to other young people. We like to have fun but not at the expense of being true to ourselves.”

‘Live Stream’ is the first track to be released from High Beams, featuring the distinctive vocals of break-out soul artist TEEKS. ‘Live Stream’ is about pushing for conversation around important issues even if people aren’t willing to listen.

The single is accompanied by a video directed by Connor Prichard and includes footage of the first two intifadas in Palestine as well as the uprising for Apartheid in South Africa with MELODOWNZ inspired by the Polynesian Panthers.

‘Live Stream’ is available today from all digital streaming services.
